The Loner Poem.
Thursday, July 30, 2009

Seeing the children run past me,
I lean back at my wall quietly.
Hearing sounds of joy and laughter,
My leaving this place gets harder.

Watching them run and play,
My eyes follow them right away.
Being alone and deserted,
I envy those who are not isolated.

The other children are up and away,
Leaving me at the wall to stay.
Me being part of them,
Would just be another dream.

What are your impressions of the boy, as well as of the children in the poem?
Friday, July 17, 2009

My impression of the boy is that he is very anti-social. He “leans against the playground wall” as he might have felt insecure and in need of company. But “back against the wall he stays”, he does various meaningless activities and “never plays”. This shows that he might have been to the playground for quite a number of times but he never plays. The boy is always at the wall, which shows that he too wants to play with the other children. However, he does not have the courage to do so and remains at the wall with a sad and dull mood. When the boy “wasn’t at the wall today” there were the words ‘watch this space’ chalked on the wall he used to lean on. This may have been the actions of the boy as he may have wanted to make his presence known for a moment when he was not around anymore. As he did not mix around with any of the other children I feel that he is an anti-social person.

My impression of the children is that they do not bother about the boy at the playground wall, as they “pass him running, skipping, walking” or gossip about him in “slow huddled groups” with low whispers. The children do not communicate with the boy when they pass him by. Neither the boy nor the children yield at his “shield or shell” of loneness. Even though the children occasionally have some arguments taking place among them, the arguments do not last long. The children do not take the initiative to communicate with the boy even when the boy has gone.

Do I Sympathize With The Joker? What Have I Learnt From This Lesson?
Sunday, July 5, 2009

I do sympathize with the Joker as his backstory,(featured in "The Killing Joke" ) depicts him as an ordinary chemical engineer who then became a failed stand-up comedian with a pregnant wife. He was desperate to support his family thus, he decided to take part in a robbery, leading his partners into the chemical plant where he worked. Later, he tried to back-out of the robbery but to no avail. The gang was caught by security and all were shot dead except the "Joker"."Joker" was confronted by Batman. Petrified, he jumped into a chemical basin. Upon seeing the "transformation" of his face, he was driven insane, thus Joker was born.
It was not really his fault that he became Joker. He had no choice. Therefore, I sympathize with the Joker.

From this lesson, I have learnt that the personality of the characters are actually very important in a story. Heroes may bear good intentions but it may not show in their actions and Villains may not always be all that evil but sometimes forced by certain circumstances to behave badly.
